The presence of ESBLs can be detected by comparing the inhibitory concentration (IC) of a specific antimicrobial, such as cefepime (a 4th generation cephalosporin), cefotaxime, or ceftazidime (both 3rd generation cephalosporins), with the IC of that antimicrobial plus clavulanate, an ESBL inhibitor.
