Tetrahydrocannabinol is the main psychoactive substance found in the cannabis plant. In pure form it is a glassy solid when cold and becomes viscous and sticky if warmed. THC is poorly soluble in water, but is highly soluble in most organic solvents such as ethanol or hexane. As in the case of nicotine and caffeine, THC's most likely function in cannabis is to protect the plant from herbivores or pathogens. Dronabinol is a synthetic form of delta-9-THC. Carboxy THC is the major metabolite of cannabinoid found in urine, but is not related to source, time of exposure, amount, or impairment. Carboxy THC may be found in urine for 7-10 days following light or moderate use and as long as 4-6 weeks following heavy use. Rapid storage of THC metabolites in body fat occurs after use. These substances are then released from storage sites slowly over time. A marijuana cigarette is made from the dried leaves of the plant, Cannabis sativa.
