Part Descriptions
LP14220-5 Chicken
A chicken (Gallus gallus domesticus) is a type of domesticated bird which is often raised as a type of poultry. It is believed to be descended from the wild Indian and south-east Asian Red Junglefowl. With a population of more than 24 billion in 2003 (according to the Firefly Encyclopedia of Birds), there are more chickens in the world than any other bird. They provide two sources of food frequently consumed by humans: their meat, also known as chicken, and eggs.

Latin name: Gallus domesticus. Direct or indirect contact with bird allergens may cause sensitization. Bird allergens may be major components of house dust. Other means of exposure are pillows made of chicken feathers, arts and crafts that include Chicken feathers, and wing feathers used in fletching arrows. Cross-reactivity to Parrot, Budgerigar, Pigeon, Goose and Duck have been reported in Chicken-allergic patients. Asthma, allergic rhinitis and allergic conjunctivitis may result following exposure to Chicken feathers, epithelial cells or droppings. In Bird-Egg Syndrome, cross reactivity to Hen's egg occurs.

Egg yolk and chicken meat may have some allergens in common.
