Platelet satellitism [Presence] in Blood by Light microscopy
Active
Part Descriptions
LP19283-8 Platelet satellitism
Platelet satellitism occurs when platelets suround polymorphonuclear neutrophils to form "rosettes", especially when blood is collected at room temperature in the presence of EDTA.

LP19283-8 Platelet satellitism
Platelet satellitism occurs when platelets suround polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN) to form complex rosettes. This tends to occur at room temperature when EDTA is used as anticaogulant. IgG autoantibodies directed against the glycoprotein IIb/IIIa complex of the platelets and the Fc receptor III of neutrophils have been implicated in this phenomenon. The occurrence of platelet satellitism may cause a false decrease in platelet counts and it is important to identify it when reviewing differentials. Information from Haematologica, Vol. 84(7): July 1999.

- Change Reason
- The PrThr property is used for LOINC terms whose results are reported using an ordered categorical scale, regardless of whether or not an internal threshold was used to make that determination. This change was approved by the Laboratory LOINC Committee in June 2016.
