Active
Part Description
LP19563-3 O-Ethyl O-(p-nitrophenyl) phenylphosphonothionate
O-Ethyl O-(p-nitrophenyl) phenylphosphonothionate (EPN) is an organothiophosphorus cholinesterase inhibitor. It is a light yellow crystalline powder used as an acaricide and an insecticide on cotton. It is toxic when it comes in contact with the skin, is ingested, comes in contact with the eyes, or if its aerosols are inhaled. When EPN is heated, it produces toxic fumes of sulfur oxides, phosphorus oxides, nitrogen oxides and phosphine. Symptoms of excessive exposure include miosis, lacrimation, rhinorrhea, headache, tight chest, wheezing and laryngeal spasm, salivation, cyanosis, anorexia, nausea, abdominal cramps and diarrhea, paralysis, convulsions, low blood pressure, cardiac irregularities, and irritation of the skin and the eyes. Chronic exposure to EPN may be asymptomatic but can become increasingly dangerous. EPN is not classified as a human carcinogen. It is extremely toxic to aquatic wildlife and bioaccumulates in fish.[PubChem: 16421]
