Adefovir [Susceptibility] by Genotype method
Active
Part Description
LP28549-1 Adefovir
Adefovir dipivoxil, previously called bis-POM PMEA, works by blocking reverse transcriptase, an enzyme that is crucial for the hepatitis B virus (HBV) to reproduce in the body. Adefovir was initially developed for treatment of HIV, sold under the brand name Preveon. It was discontinued in 1999 for HIV but later approved in 2002 by the FDA for treatment of hepatitis B (HBV) and sold under the brand name Hepsera.(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adefovir)
There is some evidence that adefovir levels correlate with viral clearance, but viral resistance can occur. (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2916322/). Adefovir is associated with renal toxicity.
