Shiga toxin stx gene [Identifier] in Specimen by NAA with probe detection
Active
Term Description
This term is used to report the detection of genes that encode Shiga toxin (produced by Shigella dysenteriae serotype 1) or Shiga-like toxin (produced by Escherichia coli, including E. coli O157:H7). To report the result of an assay that only detects Shiga-like toxin genes (and not Shiga toxin gene), use a LOINC code with a Component specific for Shiga-like toxin gene(s), such as [LOINC: 81285-9].

Part Description
LP31503-3 Shiga toxin stx gene
Shiga toxins are a family of related toxins with two major groups, Stx1 and Stx2, expressed by genes considered to be part of the genome of lambdoid prophages. True Shiga toxin (Stx) is produced by Shigella dysenteriae. (Shiga-like toxins 1 and 2 (SLT-1 and 2 or Stx-1 and 2) are the Shiga toxins produced by some E. coli strains.) [Wikipedia: Shiga toxin]
