52789-5 Clot initiation [Time] in Blood by Thromboelastography
Term Description
CT (Clotting time): The CT is the latency time from adding the start reagent to blood until the clot starts to form. Prolongation of CT may be a result of coagulation deficiencies, primarily coagulation factors, or heparin (dependent on the test used). A potential contribution of heparin can be detected by comparing INTEM- with HEPTEM CT data (see "reagents" below). A shortening of CT indicates hypercoagulability.

LP69276-1 Thromboelastography
Thromboelastography (TEG) is a viscoelastic test of hemostasis. In TEG, whole blood is added to a cup in which a pin is suspended, the cup is rotated, and as the clot forms, the rotational force is transferred to the pin. The torsion of the pin is transformed into a graphic record of the physical shape of a clot during fibrin formation and lysis. TEG can provide information about the status of coagulation factors, platelet function and fibrinolysis in whole blood. TEG is primarily used for assessment of hemostasis after cardiopulmonary bypass, during liver transplant surgery, or hemorrhaging episodes. TEG parameters are also used as part of the guiding algorithms for plasma, platelet and cryoprecipitate transfusions.

52768-9 Clot formation [Time] in Blood by Thromboelastography
Term Description
Tests such as the prothrombin time (PT) and activated prothromin time (aPTT) can predict bleeding or be used for haemostasis management, but it is difficult to determine which part of the intrinsic or extrinsic pathway is disrupted in an individual. Since these tests are performed on platelet-poor plasma, they do not provide a true representation of the physiological clotting process so they do no provide adequate information on either clot formation over time or fibrinolysis. (Young et al, 2013).
Clotting time (CT) is the time for a clot to reach an amplitude of 2 mm. Clot formation time (CFT) is the time for clot firmness to incease from 2mm (CT) to 20 mm. A prolonged CFT is usually caused by poor platelet function, low platelet count, fibrin polymerization disorders or fibrinogen deficiency. Higher concentrations of heparin can also prolong CFT in the INTEM assay, but not in HEPTEM, EXTEM, FIBTEM or APTEM. A low CFT indicates hypercoagulability. PMID: 27264484

52784-6 Maximum lysis [Length fraction] in Blood by Thromboelastography
Term Description
The ML (Maximum Lysis) parameter describes the percentage of lost clot stability (relative to MCF, in %) viewed at any selected time point or when the test has been stopped. A high ML value indicates hyperfibrinolysis. While in normal blood fibrinolysis activity is quite low, in clinical samples a more rapid loss of clot stability by hyperfibrinolysis may lead to bleeding complications which can be treated by the administration of antifibrinolytic drugs.

52778-8 Maximum clot firmness [Length] in Blood by Thromboelastography
Term Description
MCF (Maximum clot firmness): MCF is the greatest vertical amplitude of the trace. It reflects the absolute strength of the fibrin and platelet clot. A low MCF is indicative of decreased platelet number or function, decreased fibrinogen level or fibrin polymerization disorders, or low activity of factor XIII. A mechanically weak clot represents a severe bleeding risk and should initiate immediate therapeutic steps. High doses of heparin can lower MCF in the INTEM assay, but not in HEPTEM, EXTEM, FIBTEM or APTEM.
