Maximum clot firmness [Length] in Blood by Thromboelastography
Active
Term Description
MCF (Maximum clot firmness): MCF is the greatest vertical amplitude of the trace. It reflects the absolute strength of the fibrin and platelet clot. A low MCF is indicative of decreased platelet number or function, decreased fibrinogen level or fibrin polymerization disorders, or low activity of factor XIII. A mechanically weak clot represents a severe bleeding risk and should initiate immediate therapeutic steps. High doses of heparin can lower MCF in the INTEM assay, but not in HEPTEM, EXTEM, FIBTEM or APTEM.

Part Descriptions
LP69276-1 Thromboelastography
Thromboelastography (TEG) is a viscoelastic test of hemostasis. In TEG, whole blood is added to a cup in which a pin is suspended, the cup is rotated, and as the clot forms, the rotational force is transferred to the pin. The torsion of the pin is transformed into a graphic record of the physical shape of a clot during fibrin formation and lysis. TEG can provide information about the status of coagulation factors, platelet function and fibrinolysis in whole blood. TEG is primarily used for assessment of hemostasis after cardiopulmonary bypass, during liver transplant surgery, or hemorrhaging episodes. TEG parameters are also used as part of the guiding algorithms for plasma, platelet and cryoprecipitate transfusions.
