Cefotaxime [Susceptibility] for meningitis by Disk diffusion (KB)
Active
Term Description
Susceptibility of an isolate to cefotaxime in the context of a patient with meningitis, i.e., the "meningitis breakpoint". Various agencies, including the FDA and CLSI in the U.S. and EUCAST in Europe, publish guidelines for determining susceptibility of different organisms to different antimicrobials. In most cases, susceptibility does not vary by type of infection, but for a few specific types of infection, including meningitis, pneumonia and urinary tract infection, certain antimicrobials have different susceptibility thresholds.

Part Descriptions
LP14831-9 Cefotaxime
Cefotaxime is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic. Like other third-generation cephalosporins, it has broad spectrum activity against Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria. In most cases, it is equivalent to ceftriaxone in terms of safety and efficacy. Cefotaxime sodium is marketed under various trade names including Claforan (Sanofi-Aventis).

LP234793-0 Isolate.meningitis
Various agencies, including the FDA and CLSI in the U.S. and EUCAST in Europe, publish guidelines for determining susceptibility of different organisms to different antimicrobials. In most cases, susceptibility does not vary by infection site, but for a few specific types of infection, including meningitis, pneumonia and urinary tract infection, certain antimicrobials have different susceptibility thresholds, which are called "breakpoints". For terms in LOINC that represent specific breakpoints, the LOINC System will indicate the type of infection that the breakpoint is based on, for example, Isolate.meningitis, Isolate.pneumonia, and Isolate.UTI.
