19343-3 Amphetamine [Presence] in Urine by Screen method
Part Descriptions
LP18868-7 Amphetamine
Amphetamine (AMPH) is a drug that stimulates both the central and peripheral nervous systems and is used to treat attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, narcolepsy and obesity. PMID: 17209801 AMPH increases extracellular monoamine neurotransmitters in the brain including dopamine, serotonin and norepinephrine. AMPH promotes presynaptic release of the neurotransmitters rather than blocking their re-uptake. Physiological responses to AMPH use include increased blood pressure, increased heart rate, increased body temperature, relaxed bronchial muscle and depressed appetite. Abuse of AMPH can cause powerful psychological dependence, tolerance, mild physical dependence associated with tachycardia, restlessness, irritability, insomnia, personality changes and an intense form of chronic intoxication psychosis similar to schizophrenia. Long-term users of AMPH can experience depression, impaired memory and motor skills most likely due to a drop in dopamine transporters and damage to dopaminergic and serotonergic neurons. Excretion of AMPH is in the urine and the rate of elimination is dependent on the pH of the urine. Urine with an alkaline pH has an excretion rate of 18-34 hours while that of acid urine is 7-14 hours.(Tietz Fundamentals of Clinical Chemistry and Molecular Diagnostics, Seventh Edition; Carl A. Burtis; David E. Bruns)

19270-8 Barbiturates [Presence] in Urine by Screen method
Part Descriptions
LP14546-3 Barbiturates
Barbiturates are CNS depressants that primarily act on gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and GABA A receptors. When GABA binds to GABA A, chloride channels open and allow the influx of chloride ions, which decrease the membrane potential and inhibit the neuron's action potential. They are used as sedatives, hypnotics, anesthetics, and anticonvulsants. Prolonged use can lead to physical tolerance and dependence, which has caused a significant decrease in their use over time. However, certain uses are still common, such as phenobarbital for refractory seizure disorders, butalbital for analgesia, and thiopental for anesthesia. PMID: 25824249

14316-4 Benzodiazepines [Presence] in Urine by Screen method
Part Descriptions
LP15014-1 Benzodiazepines
The benzodiazepines are a class of drugs with sedative, hypnotic, anxiolytic, anticonvulsant, amnestic and muscle relaxant properties. They are often used for short-term relief of severe, disabling anxiety or insomnia. Long-term use may lead to tolerance and dependency. They are believed to act on the GABA receptor GABAA, the activation of which dampens higher neuronal activity. They began to be widely prescribed for stress-related ailments in the 1960s and 1970s. Their chemical structure is based upon diazepine and phenyl groups. Common benzodiazepines include diazepam, oxazepam, chlorodiazepam, alprozolam, and temazepam.

19359-9 Cocaine [Presence] in Urine by Screen method
Part Descriptions
LP16048-8 Cocaine
Cocaine is an alkaloid of Erythroxylon coca that is grown in the northern South American Andes, India, Africa and Java. It is used medicinally as a local anesthetic and vasoconstrictor in nasal surgery and to dilate pupils. Because cocaine is a powerful central nervous system stimulant it is among the most abused drugs. Cocaine abuse can lead to sudden death due to cardiotoxicity or the sequential development of hyperthermia, agitated delirium and respiratory arrest. Cocaine is metabolized in the liver to inactive benzoylecgonine (BZE). BZE is pharmacologically inactive and has a longer half-life than its parent drug cocaine. It is the substance most tested for when investigating suspected cocaine abuse. Cocaethylene (CE) is produced in the liver in the presence of ethanol and has been shown to have similar stimulatory effects as cocaine in animal studies.(Tietz Fundamentals of Clinical Chemistry and Molecular Diagnostics, Seventh Edition) Cocaethylene is toxic to the myocardium. PMID: 8761012

LP16048-8 Cocaine
An alkaloid ester extracted from the leaves of plants including coca. It is a local anesthetic and vasoconstrictor and is clinically used for that purpose, particularly in the eye, ear, nose, and throat. It also has powerful central nervous system effects similar to the amphetamines and is a drug of abuse. Cocaine, like amphetamines, acts by multiple mechanisms on brain catecholaminergic neurons; the mechanism of its reinforcing effects is thought to involve inhibition of dopamine uptake.

19381-3 Carboxy tetrahydrocannabinol [Presence] in Urine by Screen method
Part Descriptions
LP14468-0 Carboxy tetrahydrocannabinol
Carboxy THC is the major metabolite of cannabinoid found in urine, but is not related to source, time of exposure, amount, or impairment. Carboxy THC may be found in urine for 7-10 days following light or moderate use and as long as 4-6 weeks following heavy use. THC metabolites are stored rapidly in body fat following use and are released slowly over time.

LP14468-0 Carboxy tetrahydrocannabinol
11-nor-9-carboxy-delta-9-THC is the major metabolite (carboxy THC) in urine but is not related to source, time of exposure, amount, or impairment. Rapid storage of THC metabolites in body fat occurs after use. These substances are then released from storage sites slowly over time. A marijuana cigarette is made from the dried leaves of the plant, Cannabis sativa. The immediate effects of smoking marijuana include a faster heartbeat and pulse rate, bloodshot eyes, and a dry mouth and throat. The drug can impair or reduce short-term memory, alter sense of time, and reduce the ability to do things which require concentration, swift reactions and coordination, such as driving and operating machinery. 19550-3 Methadone [Presence] in Urine by Screen method
Part Descriptions
LP15015-8 Methadone
Methadone (also known as Symoron, Dolophine, Amidone, Methadose, Physeptone, Heptadon and many other names) is a synthetic opioid. It is used medically as an analgesic and a maintenance anti-addictive and reductive preparation for use by patients with opioid dependency. Because it is an acyclic analog of morphine, methadone acts on the same opioid receptors and thus has many of the same effects. Methadone is also used in managing severe chronic pain.

19554-5 Methamphetamine [Presence] in Urine by Screen method
Part Descriptions
LP16194-0 Methamphetamine
Methamphetamine (MA) is a drug of abuse also referred to as meth, crystal and speed. It is a central nervous system stimulant that can be injected, smoked, snorted or ingested. Short-term MA abuse causes an increase of energy, sense of well-being and decreased appetite that lasts 6-8 hours. PMID: 19042205 MA use can lead to stroke, cardiac arrhythmia, stomach cramps, shaking, anxiety, insomnia, paranoia, hallucinations, and structural changes to the brain. Pregnant women who use MA can cause growth retardation, premature birth, and developmental disorders in neonates and long lasting intellectual deficits to the children as they grow. PMID: 10908000 Users addicted to MA experience withdrawal symptoms that include dysphoria, fatigue, insomnia and an increased appetite. In chronic MA users positron emission tomography has proven a decrease in dopamine D2 receptors which is associated with mental deterioration that can be reversed to some extent after abstaining from MA. PMID: 19042205

LP14735-2 Tricyclic antidepressants
Tricyclic antidepressants get their name from their three ringed molecular structure. The primary use of tricyclic antidepressants is to treat depression as well as neuralgic pain, chronic pain, and migraine prophylaxis. In children, tricyclic antidepressants are used to treat enuresis, obsessive-compulsive disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, school phobia, and separation anxiety. These drugs are are taken orally and are absorbed by the liver and then excreted through the kidneys. Tricyclic antidepressants block the absorption of neurotransmitters at nerve terminals, which makes the neurotransmitters more available in the brain. [MEDSCAPE_EMED:819204]
