Part Descriptions
LP16734-3 Parietal cell
Parietal cells are epithelial cells which secrete acid (HCl) and intrinsic factor into the stomach. Acid is required for proper digestion of food and Intrinsic factor is required for the absorption of Vitamin B12 in the small intestine. An inbalance of either will cause disease. Excessive acid production can cause peptic ulcers. Autoantibodies against the parietal cells or intrinsic factor cause either a reduction in vitamin B12 absorption (pernicious anemia) or Achlorydria, where the parietal cells are damaged, unable to produce enough gastric acid, causing an increased pH in the stomach, leading to digestive problems and an increase in the risk of gastroenteritis (an inflammation of the GI tract). LP28803-2 Parietal cell Ab
Most patients with pernicious anemia have parietal cell antibodies. However, the fact that such antibodies are found with increased frequency in unaffected family members, as well as in patients with other autoimmune diseases, suggests these antibodies do not cause disease by themselves.

- Change Reason
- The EIA method, which was always intended to cover more than just enzyme-linked immunoassay and whose display name for the long common name has always been Immunoassay, was renamed IA in order to eliminate ambiguity about whether the method has a broader meaning than just enzyme-linked immunoassay. Likewise, EIA.rapid was renamed IA.rapid. These changes were approved by the Laboratory LOINC Committee in June 2016.
