Enterovirus and Parechovirus A RNA [Identifier] in Specimen by NAA with probe detection
Active
Term Description
Enterovirus and parechovirus are both in the family picornaviridae. Like enterovirus, parechovirus is thought to be a potential cause of acute gastroenteritis in children, as well as severe central nervous system infection in the neonatal period. It may be underdiagnosed without testing. As a result, it has been recommended that, because of common clinical presentations, real time PCR for both viruses should be performed, especially in the case of atypical neonatal seizures. LP135478-8 Enterovirus & Parechovirus A
Parechovirus is a viral genus in the family Picornaviridae. The genus is composed of two species: Human parechovirus and Ljungan virus.
Six types of human parechovirus have been identified: human parechovirus 1 (formerly echovirus 22), human parechovirus 2 (formerly echovirus 23), and human parechoviruses 3, 4, 5 and 6, respectively. Human parechoviruses cause mild, gastrointestinal or respiratory illness, but have been implicated in cases of myocarditis and encephalitis. Human parechoviruses are commonly spread and more than 95% of humans are infected by human parechoviruses early in life, within two to five years of age.

Enteroviruses are small, non-enveloped, single stranded RNA viruses in the picornavirus family and include coxsackievirus, rhinovirus, echovirus, and poliovirus species. They are the most common viral pathogen worldwide, and clinical manifestations range from mild, cold-like symptoms to severe infections, including encephalitis, aseptic (viral) meningitis, and myocarditis. Enterovirus infection has also been associated with the onset of type I diabetes mellitus. PMID: 23764548
