Influenza virus A+B Ag [Presence] in Nose by Rapid immunoassay
Active
Term Description
This test is intended to encode results for tests which detect but do not differentiate Influenza type A and B viral antigens from nasal swab or nasal wash specimen in 10 minutes or less. It is typified by the Quidel's QuickVue Influenza test.

Part Description
LP14402-9 Influenza virus A+B
Influenza virus from the family Orthomyxoviridae are enveloped negative-strand RNA viruses with segmented genomes containing seven to eight gene segments. Of the five genera in the family, only influenza A virus (IAV), influenza B and C viruses are medically relevant to humans. Influenza A and B viruses have a similar structure whereby these viruses each contain eight discrete single-stranded RNA gene segments, each encoding at least one protein. Aquatic birds harboring avian IAV are the likely natural reservoir for all known IAV subtypes and are probably the original source of all human pandemic IAV strains. IAV maintained in wild birds have been associated with stable host switch events to novel hosts including most often to domestic poultry but also to horses, swine, toothed whales and humans, among other species. Although influenza virus B has been isolated from seals, type B is isolated almost always from humans. Influenza C virus has been isolated from pigs and dogs. While influenza B and C virus also cause illness in humans, host switch events and high mutation rates among IAV types causes respiratory infections in humans ranging from asymptomatic to fatal and are the cause of the influenza pandemics in the 20th and 21st centuries. Pandemics are attributed to "novel" viruses which possess a viral hemagglutinin (HA) to which humans do not have immunity. PMID: 25812763 [CDC:flu/about/viruses/types]

- Change Reason
- The PrThr property is used for LOINC terms whose results are reported using an ordered categorical scale, regardless of whether or not an internal threshold was used to make that determination. This change was approved by the Laboratory LOINC Committee in June 2016.; The EIA method, which was always intended to cover more than just enzyme-linked immunoassay and whose display name for the long common name has always been Immunoassay, was renamed IA in order to eliminate ambiguity about whether the method has a broader meaning than just enzyme-linked immunoassay. Likewise, EIA.rapid was renamed IA.rapid. These changes were approved by the Laboratory LOINC Committee in June 2016.
