Part Description
LP18221-9 Volatiles
Testing for volatile substances, such as ethanol, methanol, isopropanol, and acetone, in whole blood, urine, and other patient specimens is performed to evaluate toxicity. Ethanol is a significant substance of abuse in the United States. It is present in beer, wine, vodka, whiskey and other liquors. The concentration of ethanol in blood correlates with the degree of intoxication. As a depressant, it alters cerebral function causing typical symptoms such as impaired thought, clouded judgment, and changed behavior. Methanol and isopropanol are highly toxic volatile substances and result from exogenous ingestion. Acetone is generally elevated in metabolic conditions such as diabetic ketoacidosis.
