Part Descriptions
LP15279-0 1-Methylhistidine
1-Methylhistidine is an amino acid metabolite and is a component of the dietary peptide anserine. Low levels may be due to inadequate methyl group transfer and result in low histidine levels. Methyl-transferase enzymes require Vitamin B12 and folate, so deficiencies in these may lead to decreased 1-Methylhistidine and histidine levels.

27326-8 Alanine [Moles/volume] in Urine
Part Descriptions
LP15331-9 Alanine
Alanine is a non-essential amino acid that exists as two distinct enantiomers: L-alanine and D-alanine. Alanine is one of the primary amino acids (secondary to leucine) used for protein construction. It is produced from pyruvate, exists in high levels in plasma, and is involved in the metabolism of sugar and organic acids.[PubChem: Alanine] Alanine acts as a substrate for alanine aminotransferase (ALT), an enzyme commonly measured to determine liver health. Increased alanine levels are seen in patients with lactic acidosis, carbamoyl phosphate synthetase deficiency, histidinemia, hyperprolinemia, and ornithine transcarbamylase deficiency. In patients with a mitochondrial disease, elevated alanine levels are primarily seen during times of physiologic stress or regression. PMID: 18243024

27341-7 Alpha aminobutyrate [Moles/volume] in Urine
Part Descriptions
LP15353-3 Alpha aminobutyrate
Alpha-Aminobutyric acid (AABA) is an isomer of the amino acid aminobutyric acid with chemical formula C4 H9 NO2. There is also gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and beta-aminobutyric acid. It is a key intermediate in the biosynthesis of ophthalmic acid or ophthalmate, which was first isolated from calf lens.

LP15353-3 Alpha aminobutyrate
Alpha amniobutyric acid (AABA), also known as Alpha-amino-N-butyric acid (A-ANB), is an intermediate formed during the catabolism of methionine and threonine. Increases in AABA occur secondary to elevations of either methionine or threonine. AABA becomes propionic acid via alpha-ketobutyric acid in the presence of adequate amounts of thiamin, vitamin B2(as FAD), vitamin B3(as NAD), lipoic acid and magnesium. Deficiencies of any of these, or vitamin B6, could cause increases in AABA. Elevated or decreased levels of the amino acid may indicate a congenital enzyme defect.

27296-3 Arginine [Moles/volume] in Urine
Part Descriptions
LP15416-8 Arginine
Arginine (symbol Arg or R) is an amino acid. The L-form (L-arginine) is one of the 20 most common natural amino acids. In mammals, arginine is classified as a conditionally essential amino acid, depending on the developmental stage and health status of the individuals. Infants are unable to effectively synthesize arginine, making it nutritionally essential for them. Adults, however, are able to synthesize arginine in the urea cycle. The body uses arginine for a variety of purposes, including boosting immune system function and improving blood flow. Arginine sources include diet, medication, and/or nutritional supplements. Dietary sources include meat, dairy products and fish.

26680-9 Aspartate [Moles/volume] in Urine
Part Descriptions
LP15425-9 Aspartate
Aspartic acid (Asp), also known as aspartate, the name of its anion, is one of the 20 natural proteinogenic amino acids which are the building blocks of proteins. As with each of the 20 natural amino acids, there are two abbreviations commonly used to designate aspartic acid: Asp (three letter) and D (one letter). The abbreviations signifying a choice of either aspartic acid or asparagine are Asx (three-letter) and B (one letter). As its name indicates, aspartic acid is the carboxylic acid analog of asparagine. It is non-essential in mammals, and might serve as an excitatory neurotransmitter in the brain. It is also a metabolite in the urea cycle, and participates in gluconeogenesis. As a neurotransmitter, aspartic acid may provide resistance to fatigue and thus lead to endurance, although the evidence to support this idea is not strong.

26968-8 Beta alanine [Moles/volume] in Urine
Part Descriptions
LP15431-7 Beta alanine
In biochemistry, beta-alanine is the only naturally occurring beta amino acid, which are amino acids in which the amino group is at the -position from the carboxylate group (i.e., two atoms away). The IUPAC name for beta-alanine would be 3-aminopropionic acid. Unlike its normal counterpart, L-alanine, beta-alanine has no chiral center. beta-alanine is not used in the biosynthesis of any major proteins or enzymes. It is formed in vivo by the degradation of dihydrouracil and carnosine. It is a component of the naturally occurring peptides carnosine and anserine and also of pantothenic acid (Vitamin B-5) which itself is a component of coenzyme A. Under normal conditions, beta-alanine is metabolized into acetic acid.

LP15432-5 Beta aminoisobutyrate
Beta aminoisobutyric acid (BAIB) is a nonprotein amino acid that is an end product of pyrimidine metabolism. The R and S enantiomers (previously named D-(minus)-BAIB and L-plus-BAIB) are produced from thymine and L-valine, respectively. Under normal circumstances, urine contains predominantly R-BAIB (from thymine) because it is eliminated by filtration and tubular secretion, while plasma contains about 80% S-BAIB (from valine), which is reabsorbed in the kidneys. In patients with dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase deficiency, thymine catabolism is decreased, which results in moderately decreased CSF concentration and markedly decreased plasma concentration of BAIB. On the other hand, urine BAIB is elevated despite decreased breakdown of thymine, which indicates that there must be cross-over in the thymine and valine degradation pathways. PMID: 14705962 Deficiency of D-beta-aminoisobutyrate:pyruvate aminotransferase (EC 2.6.1.40) , an enzyme that is involved in the catabolism R-BAIB, also results in elevated urine BAIB and is associated with hyperuricemia. 27294-8 Carnosine [Moles/volume] in Urine
Part Descriptions
LP15476-2 Carnosine
Carnosine (beta -alanyl-L-histidine) is a dipeptide of the amino acids beta -alanine and histidine. It is highly concentrated in muscle and brain tissues. Studies have shown that it can be used as an effective dietary supplement for people with autism, potentially improving such areas as auditory processing, speech language skills, motor skills, and socialization. However, supplemental carnosine may increase corticosterone levels, which can explain the hyperactivity sometimes seen in high doses. Researchers in Australia, Britain, and Russia have also shown that carnosine has a number of antioxidant properties that may be beneficial. Carnosine has been proven to scavenge ROS (radical oxygen species) as well as alpha-beta unsaturated aldehydes formed from peroxidation of cell membrane fatty acids during oxidative stress. It can oppose glycation and it can chelate divalent metal ions.

26962-1 Cystine [Moles/volume] in Urine
Part Descriptions
LP14976-2 Cystine
Cystine is an oxidized dimeric form of cysteine. It is formed by linking two cysteine residues via a disulfide bond (cys-S-S-cys) between the -SH groups. Cystine was discovered in 1810 but was not recognized as a component of proteins until it was isolated from the horn of a cow in 1899.1 Cystine is found in high concentrations in the cells of the immune system, skeletal and connective tissues, skin, digestive enzymes, and in hair. Hair and skin are 10-14% cystine.

LP14976-2 Cystine
Cystinuria is an inherited amino acid transport problem resulting in large amounts of cystine being excreted in the urine. Cystinuria often causes the formation of staghorn calculi or multiple large, bilateral stones. Urinary tract obstruction, infection, and renal failure are common, especially in men, due to the size and shape of the stones. Recurrence of cystine stones is common following surgical treatment. Therapy includes reducing excretion and increasing solubility of cystine.
Cystine is a hydrophilic amino acid with uncharged polar groups. Cystines' sulfhydryl group is functional in the activity of many enzymes. Increased in cystinuria which is caused by mutations in the SLC3A1 and SLC7A9 genes. (Information from ARUP Laboratories 9/14/06)

26740-1 Hydroxyproline [Moles/volume] in Urine
Part Descriptions
LP15650-2 Hydroxyproline
4-Hydroxyproline, or hydroxyproline (C 5 H 9 O 3 N), is an uncommon amino acid, abbreviated as HYP. Hydroxyproline differs from proline by the presence of a hydroxyl (OH) group attached to the C (gamma) atom.
Proline hydroxylation requires ascorbic acid (vitamin C). The most obvious, first effects (gingival and hair problems) of absence of ascorbic acid in humans come from the resulting defect in hydroxylation of proline residues of collagen, with reduced stability of the collagen molecule, causing scurvy.
Increased serum and urine levels of hydroxyproline have also been demonstrated in Paget's disease.

27323-5 Leucine [Moles/volume] in Urine
Part Descriptions
LP15699-9 Leucine
Leucine, an essential amino acid isomeric with isoleucine, is the most common amino acid found in proteins. It is required for optimal growth in infancy and childhood and for nitrogen equilibrium in adults. It is also involved in maintaining muscles mass by equalizing synthesis and breakdown of proteins. The major food sources of leucine are whole grains, milk and milk products, eggs, meat, soy beans, and leafy vegetables. Leucine toxicity, as seen in decompensated Maple Syrup Urine Disease (MSUD), causes delirium and neurologic compromise, and can be life-threatening.

26963-9 Methionine [Moles/volume] in Urine
Part Descriptions
LP15730-2 Methionine
Methionine is an essential nonpolar amino acid, and a lipotropic. Methionine and cysteine are the only sulfur-containing proteinogenic amino acids. The methionine derivative S-adenosyl methionine (SAM) serves as a methyl donor. Methionine plays a role in cysteine, carnitine and taurine synthesis by the transsulfuration pathway, lecithin production, the synthesis of phosphatidylcholine and other phospholipids. Improper conversion of methionine can lead to atherosclerosis. Methionine, a chelating agent, is one of only two amino acids encoded by a single codon (AUG) in the standard genetic code (tryptophan, encoded by UGG, is the other). The codon AUG is also significant, in that it carries the Start message for a ribosome to begin protein translation from mRNA. As a consequence, methionine is incorporated into the N-terminal position of all proteins in eukaryotes and archaea during translation, although it is usually removed by post-translational modification.

27292-2 Ornithine [Moles/volume] in Urine
Part Descriptions
LP15753-4 Ornithine
Ornithine is an amino acid that, under the action of the enzyme arginase on L-arginine, yields urea. Therefore, ornithine is a central part of the urea cycle, which eliminates excess nitrogen. Ornithine is not an amino acid coded by DNA, and in that sense, it is not involved in protein synthesis. In mammalian non-hepatic tissues, however, the urea cycle is mainly involved in arginine biosynthesis, making ornithine an important metabolic process. It is not directly a product of the the genetic code because polypeptides containing unprotected ornithines undergo spontaneous lactamization. This proved to be a problem when ornithine was originally classified among the other 20 naturally occuring amino acids.

26967-0 Phenylalanine [Moles/volume] in Urine
Part Descriptions
LP15792-2 Phenylalanine
Phenylalanine is an essential alpha-amino acid. It exists in two forms, a D and an L form, which are enantiomers (mirror-image molecules) of each other. It has a benzyl side chain and its name comes from its chemical structures that consists of a phenyl group substituted for one of the hydrogens in the side chain of alanine. Because of its phenyl group, phenylalanine is an aromatic compound that at room temperature exists as a white, powdery solid. L -phenylalanine (LPA) is an electrically-neutral amino acid and its enantiomer, D -phenylalanine (DPA), can be synthesized artificially. L -phenylalanine can also be converted into L -tyrosine, another one of the twenty protein-forming amino acids.

26738-5 Phosphoserine [Moles/volume] in Urine
Part Descriptions
LP14889-7 Phosphoserine
Phosphoserine is an essential amino acid derivative. Elevated phosphoserine levels occur due to pyridoxal 5 phosphate (P5P) deficiency. P5P is the active form of vitamin B6, pyridoxine. Cystathionine synthetase and cystathionine lyase use P5P as a cofactor and impaired cystathionine synthetase activity leads to homocystinuria, which is often associated with mental retardation.

Part Descriptions
LP15818-5 Proline
L-Proline is one of the twenty proteinogenic units used in the building blocks of proteins. The other nineteen units are all primary amino acids, but due to the cyclic binding of the three-carbon side chain to the nitrogen of the backbone, proline lacks a primary amine group (ˆ'NH2). The nitrogen in proline is referred to as a secondary amine. Proline is sometimes called an amino acid, although the IUPAC definition of an amine requires a carbon-nitrogen double bond.

26724-5 Sarcosine [Moles/volume] in Urine
Part Descriptions
LP15859-9 Sarcosine
Sarcosine is the N-methyl derivative of glycine. It is a natural amino acid found in muscles and other body tissues. In the laboratory, it may be synthesized from chloroacetic acid and methylamine. Sarcosine is found naturally as an intermediate in the metabolism of choline to glycine. Sarcosine is sweet to the taste and dissolves in water. It is used in manufacturing biodegradable surfactants and toothpastes as well as in other applications. Sarcosine is ubiquitous in biological materials and is present in such foods as egg yolks, turkey, ham, vegetables, legumes, etc. Sarcosine is reported to be formed from dietary intake of choline and from the metabolism of methionine and is rapidly degraded to glycine, which, in addition to its importance as a constituent of protein, plays a significant role in various physiological processes as a prime metabolic source of components of living cells such as glutathione, creatine, purines and serine.
Sarcosinemia can result from severe folate deficiency because of the folate requirement for the conversion of sarcosine to glycine.

Part Descriptions
LP15861-5 Serine
Serine, one of the 20 amino acids, is commonly found in animal proteins. Only the L-stereoisomer appears in nature. It is not essential to the human diet, because it can be synthesized from other metabolites, including glycine. Serine was first obtained from silk protein, a particularly rich source, in 1865. Its name is derived from the Latin for silk, sericum. Serine's structure was established in 1902.

30563-1 Taurine [Moles/volume] in Urine
Part Descriptions
LP15878-9 Taurine
Taurine (Latin taurus for bull, as it was first isolated from ox (Bos taurus) bile in 1827 by German scientists Friedrich Tiedemann and Leopold Gmelin) or 2-aminoethanesulfonic acid is an acidic chemical substance found in high abundance in the tissues of many animals (metazoa), especially sea animals. Taurine is also found in plants, fungi, and some bacteria, but in far less quantity. Taurine is a derivative of the sulphur-containing (sulfhydryl) amino acid, cysteine. Although it is often called an amino acid, even in scientific literature, it lacks a carboxyl group and therefore does not qualify as an amino acid. It does contain a sulfonate group and may be called an amino sulfonic acid. Small polypeptides have been identified which contain taurine but to date no tRNA synthetase has been identified that specifically recognizes taurine.

27322-7 Threonine [Moles/volume] in Urine
Part Descriptions
LP15890-4 Threonine
Threonine, one of the 20 naturally occuring amino acids, is nutritionally essential in humans because they cannot synthesze it. Threonine contains two chiral centers, so there are four possible stereoisomers of threonine, or two possible diastereomers of L-threonine. However, the name L-threonine is used for one single enantiomer, (2 S ,3 R)-2-amino-3-hydroxybutanoic acid. The second diastereomer (2 S ,3 S), which is rarely present in nature, is called L-allo-threonine. The threonine side chain can undergo O-linked glycosylation. Threonine can become phosphorylated through the action of a threonine kinase. In its phosphorylated form, it is referred to as phosphothreonine. Foods high in threonine are cottage cheese, poultry, fish, meat, lentils, and sesame seeds. Threonine is a secondary marker for citrullinemia type II, an inherited disorder that causes ammonia and other toxic products to accumulate in the blood.

34384-8 Tryptophan [Moles/volume] in Urine
Part Descriptions
LP15931-6 Tryptophan
Tryptophan is an amino acid and essential in human nutrition. It is one of the 20 amino acids in the genetic code (codon UGG). Only the L-stereoisomer appears in mammalian protein, however the D-stereoisomer is occasionally found in natural materials (for example, the marine venom peptide contryphan).

LP15931-6 Tryptophan
An essential amino acid that is necessary for normal growth in infants and for NITROGEN balance in adults. It is a precursor of INDOLE ALKALOIDS in plants. It is a precursor of SEROTONIN (hence its use as an antidepressant and sleep aid). It can be a precursor to NIACIN, albeit inefficiently, in mammals.
Source: National Library of Medicine, MeSH 2006
LP15931-6 Tryptophan
Tryptophoan (or L-tryptophan) is an amino acid, a protein building block that can be found in many plant and animal proteins. L-tryptophan is called an "essential" amino acid because the body can't make it. It must be acquired from food. L-tryptophan is used for insomnia, sleep apnea, depression, anxiety, facial pain, a severe form of premenstrual syndrome called premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), smoking cessation, grinding teeth during sleep (bruxism), attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), Tourette's syndrome, and to improve athletic performance. L-tryptophan is naturally found in animal and plant proteins. L-tryptophan is considered an essential amino acid because our bodies can't make it. It is important for the development and functioning of many organs in the body. After absorbing L-tryptophan from food, our bodies convert it to 5-HTP (5-hyrdoxytryptophan), and then to serotonin. Serotonin is a hormone that transmits signals between nerve cells. It also causes blood vessels to narrow. Changes in the level of serotonin in the brain can alter mood.

26961-3 Valine [Moles/volume] in Urine
Part Descriptions
LP15946-4 Valine
Valine, one of the 20 proteinogenic amino acids, is nutritionally essential. It is named after the plant valerian. Foods that are good sources of valine include cottage cheese, fish, poultry, peanuts, sesame seeds, and lentils. In sickle cell disease, the replacement of an A by T in the beta chain gene of hemoglobin changes the codon GAG (for glutamic acid) to GTG (which encodes valine). Thus valine, a hydrophic amnio acid, replaces glutamic acid, a hydrophilic amino acid, causing hemoglobin to not fold correctly. It is also a precursor in the penicillin biosynthetic pathway.
