- The "Probe.mag capture" Method has been deprecated and replaced with the more general "Probe" Method since the "mag capture" portion represents how the nucleic acids are isolated, which is not a distinction made in the LOINC Method for molecular tests. Given that updating the Method would change the meaning of the term, a new term was created to replace the existing term as recommended by the Special Topics workgroup on PCR-based Methods and approved by the LOINC Lab Committee at the June 2017 meeting.

88267-0 | Proteus sp atpD gene [Presence] by Probe in Positive blood culture |
Term Description
Magnetic beads and fluorescent probes are used to capture and detect targeted nucleic acid sequences specific to Proteus species within the atpD gene in positive blood culture. The atpD gene encodes "ATP synthase subunit beta".
Part Descriptions
LP183540-6 Probe.mag capture
Nucleic acid is first concentrated and purified using a bead-based method, followed by a oligonucleotide probe detection of sequence of interest with signal enhancement.

LP185693-1 Proteus sp (atpD) gene
Proteus sp. is a genus of rod shaped bacteria characterized by their intensive swarming growth. They are opportunistic pathogens and can be found in urine, feces, wounds, and other clinical sources. Hosts for Proteus sp. include: flies, fish, wild and domestic animals. Proteus sp. presence in soil, is a sign of fecal pollution and poses a risk of water and seafood contamination. Serological and molecular testing are used to determine the specific Proteus sp. strain. Proteus sp. strains can cause a range of illnesses from diarrhea, kidney stones and respiratory tract infections to meningitis. PMID: 26748500

- Change Reason
- The PrThr property is used for LOINC terms whose results are reported using an ordered categorical scale, regardless of whether or not an internal threshold was used to make that determination. This change was approved by the Laboratory LOINC Committee in June 2016.
