Methicillin susceptible Staphylococcus aureus DNA [Presence] in Specimen by NAA with probe detection
Active
Term Description
This test detects the presence of DNA from methicillin susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA), and can be run on a bacterial isolate or a primary specimen (such as blood or urine) that is presumed to contain infectious microorganisms. This term was created for the New York State Department of Health and is limited for use by public health laboratories, which are unique in that they can sometimes run tests on any sample, either human or environmental, using locally-developed tests. Other organizations, such as hospitals or commercial laboratories, use a term that specifies the particular specimen(s) that the test kit they are using has been approved for.
Part Description
LP186082-6 Staphylococcus aureus.methicillin susceptible
Methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) is a type of Staph aureus that does not contain the mecA gene and therefore, is still susceptible to methicillin and other beta-lactam antibiotics. Transfer of mecA to MSSA turns MSSA into methicillin-resistant Staph aureus (MRSA), which is an increasingly common cause of both hospital- and community-acquired skin and wound infections. - The PrThr property is used for LOINC terms whose results are reported using an ordered categorical scale, regardless of whether or not an internal threshold was used to make that determination. This change was approved by the Laboratory LOINC Committee in June 2016.
