Multiple drug resistant gram negative organism [Identifier] in Specimen by Culture
Active
Term Description
This is a generic test that includes multi-resistant gram-negative bacilli. The microorganisms can be included in monitoring programs and special measures to control infection and/or colonization are defined based on clinical and epidemiological criteria and will vary over time. Examples of specimens are, pharyngeal swabs, rectal swabs, and axillary swabs.

Part Descriptions
LP200125-5 Multiple drug resistant gram negative organism
For epidemiologic purposes, multiple drug resistant organisms (MDROs) are defined as microorganisms, predominantly bacteria, that are resistant to one or more classes of antimicrobial agents. Although the names of certain MDROs describe resistance to only one agent (e.g., MRSA, VRE), these pathogens are frequently resistant to most available antimicrobial agents. These highly resistant organisms deserve special attention in healthcare facilities. [CDC: MDRO definition]

LP6209-3 Culture
A culture is a laboratory procedure where a sample of tissue or fluid from a patient is placed in or on growth media (agar, broth) to induce the proliferation of potentially infectious agents (bacteria, fungi, viruses). The presence of growth is documented and the organisms are identified to determine whether or not a pathogen is present.
Once a pathogen is identified, specific testing techniques can be used to determine drug susceptibilities for assistance in treatment. [https://courses.lumenlearning.com/boundless-microbiology/chapter/culturing-bacteria/]
