Melatonin [Mass/volume] in Saliva (oral fluid)
Active
Term Description
Melatonin assays are used to evaluate the phase position of the biological clock and alignment of an individual's circadian rhythm with a typical 24-hour sleep-wake cycle. Saliva melatonin levels are relatively unaffected by changes in posture and at any given time, the saliva concentration is approximately 30% of that in the plasma. Given that saliva sampling is noninvasive and painless, saliva provides a convenient alternative to plasma. Timed melatonin measurement is used to identify sleep-wake cycle disorders, and melatonin can also be used to determine pineal gland function and help in the diagnosis of pineal tumors. Part Descriptions
LP15036-4 Melatonin
A biogenic amine that is found in animals and plants. In mammals, melatonin is produced by the PINEAL GLAND. Its secretion increases in darkness and decreases during exposure to light. Melatonin is implicated in the regulation of SLEEP, mood, and REPRODUCTION. Melatonin is also an effective antioxidant.

LP7565-7 Saliva
Saliva is produced primarily by the parotid, submaxillary, and sublingual glands. It is secreted at the rate of 0-3 milliliters per minute which is affected by various factors including anxiety, hydration and hunger. Oral fluid is broadly used to test for drugs of abuse in employment and forensic settings, and is especially useful since it is difficult to adulterate, is quick and is non-invasive. Oral fluid is used to test a variety of analytes, including to test alcohol, HIV and other antibodies, therapeutic drugs and steroids, but its primary use is to test for drugs of abuse including amphetamines, cocaine and metabolites, opioids, methadone, cannabis and heroin.
