Term Description
CD3-CD16+CD56+ are cytotoxic lymphoctyes also known as Natural Killer (NK) cells. NK lymphocytes destroy cells that are infected by viruses, cancer cells, or cells that are subject to rejection after tissue transplantation. CD3-CD16+CD56+ kill their target cells by secreting cytoplasmic proteins known as perforin and granzyme. Perforin perforate the target cell membrane to allow the granzyme to infiltrate the target cell which causes cell destruction by apoptosis or necrosis. The NK lymphocytes require activators and inhibitors to control their cytotoxic activity. Decreased levels of CD3-CD16+CD56+ lymphocytes make patients especially susceptible to the early phases of herpes infection. Information from Wikipedia and www.path.sunysb.edu, accessed 2008 09 05.
