Part Descriptions
LP15257-6 Calcium
Calcium is the most plentiful mineral in the human body. Ninety-nine percent is stored in the bones and teeth where it provides structure and functionality. The remaining 1% of the body's calcium is necessary for vascular contraction and vasodilation, muscle function, nerve transmission, intracellular signaling, and hormonal secretion. Serum calcium levels do not fluctuate in response to dietary intake. Bone tissue is the reservoir for calcium and helps to maintain concentrations in the blood, the muscle, and intercellular fluids. As humans age, the bone is constantly being laid down and reabsorbed. In growing children, bone formation exceeds that of bone resorption. In young and middle-aged adults, the bone formation and resorption is about equal. In older adults, especially in post-menopausal women, bone loss exceeds that of bone formation, which is why their risk for osteoporosis continues to increase as they age.[https://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/Calcium-HealthProfessional/]

3096-5 Urea nitrogen [Mass/time] in 24 hour Urine
Part Descriptions
LP14492-0 Urea nitrogen
Urea nitrogen is the waste product formed in the liver when proteins are broken down into their respective amino acids. Once proteins are metabolized in the liver, urea nitrogen is released from the liver to the kidneys via the bloodstream. The kidneys then filter the urea nitrogen out of the bloodstream into the urine. Although the kidneys filter out most of the urea nitrogen in the blood, small traces of stable urea nitrogen remain in circulation. To evaluate kidney function, a blood urea nitrogen test (BUN test) is conducted. High amounts of urea nitrogen in the BUN test indicate complications with kidney function or decreased blood flow to the kidneys. A decrease in urea nitrogen in the BUN test is indicative of severe liver disease or malnutrition. [Lab Tests Online:bun/tab/sample/]

24447-5 Magnesium [Mass/time] in 24 hour Urine
Part Descriptions
LP14343-5 Magnesium
Magnesium salts are essential in nutrition, being required for the activity of many enzymes, especially those concerned with oxidative phosphorylation. Physiologically, it exists as an ion in the body. It is a component of both intra- and extracellular fluids and is excreted in the urine and feces. Deficiency causes irritability of the nervous system with tetany, vasodilatation, convulsions, tremors, depression, and psychotic behavior. Magnesium ion in large amounts is an ionic laxative, and magnesium sulfate (Epsom salts) is sometimes used for this purpose. So-called "milk of magnesia" is a water suspension of one of the few insoluble magnesium compounds, magnesium hydroxide; the undissolved particles give rise to its appearance and name. Milk of magnesia is a mild base, and is commonly used as an antacid.

LP14343-5 Magnesium
Very high amounts can be fed to animals with no ill effects if the kidneys are functioning. Inappetance is the major practical problem encountered
from excessive dietary magnesium. Because only a fraction of dietary magnesium is generally absorbed, high amounts of magnesium in the diet can cause an osmotic diarrhea in the animal.
This is usually of greater concern in poultry houses where the water content of manure can be a major concern to producers but does not necessarily impact the health of the birds.

27378-9 pH of 24 hour Urine
Part Descriptions
LP14752-7 pH
pH is a measure of the acidity or basicity of a solution. It is defined as the cologarithm of dissolved hydrogen ions (H+). Hydrogen ion activity coefficients cannot be measured experimentally, so they are based on theoretical calculations. The pH scale is not an absolute one, it is relative to a set of internationally established standard solutions. pH 7.0 is considered neutral.

LP14752-7 pH
Potentia Hydrogenii, commonly known as pH, is a quantitative measurement of the acidity or basicity of a substance. A substance's pH value is based on a relative scale from 1-14 depending on the substance's proton ion concentration (H+). A higher proton ion concentration results in a lower pH value. Therefore, a pH value between 0 and 7 is an acidic substance whereas a pH value between 7 and 14 is an alkaline/basic substance. A pH value of exactly 7 is a neutral substance. [https://labtestsonline.org/understanding/analytes/SearchForm?Search=pH&action_ProcessSphinxSearchForm=Go] The specific pH value of the blood is crucial in maintaining bodily functions. When the blood pH value is below normal range it is called acidosis. When the blood pH value is above normal range, it is called alkadosis. Acidosis/alkadosis can be divided into two categories: metabolic and respiratory. [https://labtestsonline.org/understanding/analytes/blood-gases/tab/test/]

3087-4 Urate [Mass/time] in 24 hour Urine
Part Descriptions
LP15935-7 Urate
Uric acid (urate) is a product of the metabolic breakdown of purine nucleotides. In humans, about 70% of daily uric acid disposal occurs via the kidneys.
Elevated levels of uric acid, or hyperuricemia, may be due to genetic inheritance or diet. Excess serum levels of uric acid can lead to a type of arthritis known as gout, kidney stones, cardiovascular disease, Type 2 diabetes, and metabolic syndrome. Lesch-Nyhan syndrome (LNS), an extremely rare inherited disorder, is also associated with very high serum uric acid levels. Spasticity, involuntary movement and cognitive retardation as well as manifestations of gout are seen in cases of this syndrome. LNS is due to mutations in the HPRT1 gene. To date (2012), mutations in nine other genes have been linked to the excretion of uric acid by the kidneys: SLC2A9; ABCG2; SLC17A1; SLC22A11; SLC22A12; SLC16A9; GCKR; LRRC16A; and PDZK1.
Decreased levels of uric acid, known as hypouricemia, can have numerous causes, including low dietary zinc or iron intake. Hypouricemia has been associated with multiple sclerosis (MS).

2695-5 Osmolality of Urine
Part Descriptions
LP15272-5 Osmolality
Osmolality is the concentration of dissolved substances contained in bodily fluids. An osmolality test can be conducted by measuring the number of particles per kilogram in a sample of fluid (blood, urine, or stool). This test is performed in order to evaluate kidney function and the body's electrolyte/water balance. Typically, osmolality is tested if an individual shows signs of low blood sodium concentration (hyponatremia), alcohol poisoning, an increase/decrease in urine, or chronic diarrhea. When analyzing osmolality, the following particles can be observed in the fluids: sodium, potassium, chlorine, urea, and glucose. Although osmolality tests are able to indicate a water imbalance, the test alone can be inconclusive as to which particular solute is the cause of the health problem. 14650-6 Citrate [Moles/time] in 24 hour Urine
Part Descriptions
LP14741-0 Citrate
A citrate is an ionic form of citric acid, such as C3 H5 O(COO)3 3ˆ', that is, citric acid minus three hydrogen ions. Citrates are compounds containing this group, either ionic compounds, the salts, or analogous covalent compounds, esters. An example of a salt is sodium citrate and an ester is trimethyl citrate. Because citric acid is a multifunctional acid, several intermediate ions exist: hydrogen citrate ion, HC6 H5 O7 2ˆ' and dihydrogen citrate ion, H2 C6 H5 O7 ˆ'. These may form salts as well, called acid salts. Salts of the hydrogen citrate ions are weakly acidic, whereas salts of the citrate ion itself (with an inert cation such as sodium ion) are weakly basic.

LP14741-0 Citrate
Citrate testing is used to diagnose renal tubular acidosis and evaluate kidney stone disease. Acid-base balance plays a critical role in citrate excretion. In acidosis, increased citrate utilization occurs and causes reduced citrate excretion. In alkalosis, citrate excretion increases. Hypocitruria promotes the formation of calcium kidney stones because citrate normally binds urinary calcium as a soluble calcium citrate salt. Hypocitruria may also have a role in uric acid stone formation. Citrate excretion is impaired by acidosis, hypokalemia, urinary tract infection, and a high animal protein/high acid-ash content diet. Urine citrate levels may also be decreased with severe muscular activity, hypoparathyroidism, diabetes, and chronic renal failure. Urine citrate levels may be increased with high carbohydrate diet, estrogen therapy, and Vitamin D use. LP15483-8 Chloride
Chloride is an essential mineral required by humans that is found mainly in body fluids. It is an important, negatively charged ion in the blood, and a major electrolyte that helps to conduct electrical impulses. Electrolytes including chloride are located in the blood, lymph, and intra- and extra-cellular fluid. Chloride helps to regulate osmolarity by offsetting the positively charged sodium and potassium ions in the serum. It combines with hydrogen to form hydrochloric acid in the digestive tract which breaks down proteins, absorbs metallic minerals, and activates intrinsic factor. Chloride is absorbed both actively and passively in order to help maintain extracellular fluid volume. There is a continuous exchange of chloride and bicarbonate that occurs between the red blood cells and the plasma that controls the pH and excretion of carbon dioxide, a waste product of respiration.[https://traceminerals.com/chloride-the-forgotten-essential-mineral/]

2162-6 Creatinine [Mass/time] in 24 hour Urine
Part Descriptions
LP14355-9 Creatinine
Creatinine or creatine anhydride, is a breakdown product of creatine phosphate in muscle. The loss of water molecule from creatine results in the formation of creatinine. It is transferred to the kidneys by blood plasma, whereupon it is eliminated by glomular filtration and partial tubular excretion. Creatinine is usually produced at a fairly constant rate and measuring its serum level is a simple test. A rise in blood creatinine levels is observed only with marked damage to functioning nephrons; therefore this test is not suitable for detecting early kidney disease. Creatine and creatinine are metabolized in the kidneys, muscle, liver and pancreas.

2829-0 Potassium [Moles/time] in 24 hour Urine
Part Descriptions
LP15098-4 Potassium
Potassium (symbol K from Latin:kalium) is a key chemical element involved in neuron function and influencing osmotic balance between cells and interstitial fluid. Depletion in potassium levels results in deficient fluid and electrolyte balance in the body as well as various nervous and cardiac dysfunctions. Studies suggest diets high in potassium can reduce the risk of hypertension and possibly stroke. Foods rich in potassium include parsley, dried apricots, potatoes, bananas, avocados, soybeans, and bran, as well as most fruits, vegetables, meat and fish. Overall, clear cases of potassium deficiency are rare in healthy individuals.

2956-1 Sodium [Moles/time] in 24 hour Urine
Part Descriptions
LP15099-2 Sodium
Sodium (Na) is a positively charged electrolyte and a mineral. Eighty-five percent of Na is located in the blood and lymph fluid. The hormone aldosterone that is secreted by the adrenal glands helps to regulate Na levels by signaling the kidneys to either retain or secrete it. Damage or disease to the kidneys can lead to dangerous fluctuations of sodium. Na plays a number of key roles in the homeostasis of the human body. It helps to maintain blood volume by osmotically pulling water into the blood vessels. Too much sodium in the blood may cause too much water to be brought into the blood vessels and lead to high blood pressure. Muscles and nerves conduct electrical impulses that require charged particles including Na. The electrical currents cause muscle cells to contract and nerve cells to relay electrical signals between them. Too little sodium can lead to muscle spasms, cramps, headache, irritability, restlessness, nausea and fatigue. Extreme hyponatremia can lead to confusion, hallucinations, decreased consciousness and coma. Conversely, hypernatremia can cause lethargy or restlessness, deep tendon reflexes, muscle spasticity and seizures.

14862-7 Oxalate [Moles/time] in 24 hour Urine
Part Descriptions
LP15761-7 Oxalate
Oxalate is an organic dicarboxylate that can be found in oxalic acid, soluble salt, or insoluble salt forms. Oxalate may be consumed in certain foods, or produced within the body by the kidney, liver, epithelial, or apocrine cells. Humans cannot fully metabolize oxalate, rather bacteria within the gut must break it down. Oxalate can combine with calcium to form calcium oxalate (CaOx), which accumulates to form microcalcified crystals and kidney stones. Further studies have shown that the microcalcified crystals can lead to breast cancer or other cancerous tumors if left untreated. PMID: 26493452 ]

2779-7 Phosphate [Mass/time] in 24 hour Urine
Part Descriptions
LP14912-7 Phosphate
Phosphate levels are checked to see if a patient has a kidney or bone-related disease or to identify problems with certain glands, such as the parathyroid glands. Phosphate is a salt of phosphoric acid. In organic chemistry, a phosphate, or organophosphate, is an ester of phosphoric acid. The body needs phosphate to build and repair bones and teeth and to help the nervous system function. A high level of phosphate in the blood is usually caused by a kidney problem since they help control the amount of phosphate in the blood. Phosphate levels also affects the level of calcium in the blood, so both calcium and phosphate levels are usually measured at the same time. In animals, rat poison containing phosphorus has been responsible for intoxication, including secondary poisoning. Chemical tests must be used for confirmation since clinical and pathological findings are usually not sufficient.

81623-1 Calcium oxalate [Energy Difference] in 24 hour Urine
Term Description
Supersaturation of urine correlates with stone type. Measurement of supersaturated urine can be used for the diagnosis and management of patients with renal lithiasis, in patients who have a radiopaque stone, or when stone analysis is not possible. The supersaturation can be used to predict the likely composition. Urine supersaturation changes can also be used to monitor the effectiveness of therapy by confirming that the crystallization potential is been decreased. The differential Gibbs free energy is a measure of the thermodynamic pressure for crystals to form. For this term, a software program, EQUIL PMID: 3840540 was used to calculate the urinary supersaturation for the common kidney stone components expressed as the Gibbs free energy of transfer from a supersaturated to a saturated solution. The delta G (DG) will equal zero for solutions at saturation, will be greater than zero for super-saturated solutions, and less than zero for under-saturated solutions. Positive values above the reference mean are associated with increased risk for that type of crystal formation.

LP16846-5 Calcium oxalate
Calcium oxalate is a chemical compound that forms needle-shaped crystals. Large quantities are found in the painfully poisonous plant dumb cane. It is also found in rhubarb leaves, various species of Oxalis , and agaves, and (in lower amounts) in spinach. Most kidney stones are caused by calcium oxalate. All Arums typically have unique flowers, consisting of a pike of reduced male or female organs, or both, surrounded by a showy petal-like leaf, a bract, which is often colorful. The toxic parts are the leaves. They contain calcium oxalate, a compound derived from oxalic acid, as well as enzymes which trigger the release of antibodies called histamines in the bloodstream of persons who ingest the leaves. Oxalates are needle-like crystals, which, when eaten, may pierce the mouth, throat and digestive tract as they pass through, causing, at the very least, intense discomfort. Nonsoluble calcium oxalate crystals are found in plant stems, roots, and leaves.

LP16846-5 Calcium oxalate
Calcium oxalate (Ca[COO]2) crystals are the most frequently observed crystals in urine, and 75% of renal calculi have calcium oxalate as a component. Calcium oxalate crystals can form at any pH and have various microscopic morphologies. It is estimated that about half of the oxalate in urine comes from ascorbic acid (vitamin C), which is a precursor to oxalate. Calcium oxalate crystals are also associated with ethylene glycol ingestion, another oxalate precursor.

42678-3 Urate [Saturation Fraction] in 24 hour Urine

2701-1 Oxalate [Mass/time] in 24 hour Urine

81622-3 Hydroxyapatite [Energy Difference] in 24 hour Urine

LP208508-4 Hydroxyapatite
Hydroxylapatite, also called hydroxyapatite (HA), is a naturally occurring mineral form of calcium apatite with the formula Ca5(PO4)3(OH). HA crystal deposition disease (HADD) is a systemic disease of unknown etiology associated with para-articular and or intra-articular deposition of HA crystals. HADD is clinically manifested by localized pain, swelling, and tenderness about the affected joint along with variable limitation of joint motion. When intra-articular, HA crystals can cause joint destruction. Any joint can be involved; the shoulder is most commonly affected, resulting in "Milwaukee shoulder." Treatment includes analgesics, local heat, needling with or without aspiration of the calcific deposits, steroid injections, and possibly surgery for relief of pain. PMID: 14593560

25850-9 Ammonia [Moles/volume] in 24 hour Urine
Part Descriptions
LP14071-2 Ammonia
Ammonia (NH3) is produced in the body as a byproduct of the metabolism of amino acids and other compounds, is processed in the liver to form urea which is ultimately eliminated in the urine. Elevated blood concentrations of ammonia are toxic and can lead to brain damage, coma and death. PMID: 31082083 Testing of ammonia levels is most commonly performed to monitor various diseases and less so for occupational exposure or poisoning. Conditions associated with elevated ammonia include severe liver disease, Reye syndrome, kidney failure, and certain rare genetic diseases. Ammonia levels may also be measured to evaluate the effectiveness of treatment of hepatic encephalopathy.[Lab Tests Online: Ammonia]

6687-8 Citrate [Mass/time] in 24 hour Urine

Information from emedicine, "Hypocitraturia," by George Bennett Stackhouse IV, MD, and Medline Plus, accessed 2006 10 25

32024-2 Magnesium [Mass/volume] in 24 hour Urine

18488-7 Calcium [Mass/volume] in 24 hour Urine
