LP208368-3 Escherichia coli Stx1 & Stx2 toxin stx1 & stx2 genes
Shiga-like toxin is generated by some strains of Escherichia coli, known as Stx-producing E. coli (STEC). Shiga-like toxins are named for their similarity to the AB5-type shiga toxin produced by the bacteria Shigella dysenteriae. There are two primary types, known as Stx1 (also Stx1a or SLT1) and Stx2 (also Stx2a or SLT2). Variants of Stx1 and Stx2 have been identified but they are rarely found in clinical specimens and few are clinically significant. PMID: 25530917 Shiga-like toxins are associated with hemolytic-uremic syndrome (HUS) in which patients present with thrombocytopenia, hemolytic anemia, and kidney failure. PMID: 6131302

LP208368-3 Escherichia coli Stx1 & Stx2 toxin stx1 & stx2 genes
Shiga toxin producing E. coli (STEC) is also known as enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC) and verotocix E. coli (VTEC). STEC are strains capable of producing Shiga toxin and typically cause blood diarrhea. Hemolytic-uremic syndrome complicates 6-9 percent of STEC infections overall and about 15 percent of STEC infections in children under age 10. STEC strains are typically have one or both stx genes that encode for Shiga Toxins 1 and 2.
