LP72580-1 Fat intake
Fats are the most concentrated form of food energy for the body and aid in the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins, A, D, E and K. Most fats in foods are triglycerides, made up of a unit of glycerol combined with three fatty acids that may be the same or different. Three major types of naturally occurring fatty acids are: 1) saturated, 2) monounsaturated and 3) polyunsaturated. A fourth type, trans fatty acids, are made by partial hydrogenation of polyunsaturated oils. Other dietary fats include phospholipids, phytosterols and cholesterol.

LP203031-2 Fat.saturated intake
Saturated fats are fat molecules that have no double bonds between carbon molecules because they are saturated with hydrogen molecules. Saturated fats are typically solid at room temperature. Eating foods that contain saturated fats raises the level of cholesterol in your blood. Many foods high in saturated fats can be high in calories too. Saturated fats occur naturally in many foods, mainly from animal sources, including meat and dairy products.

LP203042-9 Trans fat intake
Trans fatty acids (also called trans fats, or trans-unsaturated fatty acids) are manufactured fats created during a process called hydrogenation, that is aimed at stabilizing polyunsaturated oils to prevent them from becoming rancid, and to keep them solid at room temperature. Most trans fat is a monounsaturated (one double bond) fatty acid. The shape of trans-fat molecules is more like cholesterol-raising saturated fat than a typical monounsaturated fatty acid. They may be particularly dangerous for the heart and may pose a risk for certain cancers. Hydrogenated fats are used in stick margarine, fast foods, commercial baked goods (donuts, cookies, crackers), processed foods, and fried foods.

LP203043-7 Polyunsaturated fat intake
Polyunsaturated fat also called (polyunsaturated fatty acid or PUFA) is one of the healthy dietary fats, along with monounsaturated fat. Found in plant and animal foods, such as salmon, vegetable oils, and some nuts and seeds, eating moderate amounts of polyunsaturated (fat in place of saturated and trans fats can benefit your health. Polyunsaturated fats can help lower your LDL (bad) cholesterol. Polyunsaturated fats contain omega-3 and omega-6 fats. These are essential fatty acids that the body needs for brain function and cell growth. Our bodies do not make essential fatty acids, so you can only get them from food. Some foods and oils with higher amounts of polyunsaturated fats include: walnuts, sunflower seeds, flax seeds or flax oil, fish, such as salmon, mackerel, herring, albacore tuna, and trout, corn oil and soybean oil.

LP203044-5 Monounsaturated fat intake
Monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs or also called monounsaturated fats) are fatty acids that have a single double bond in the fatty acid chain with all of the remainder carbon atoms being single-bonded. By contrast, polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) have more than one double bond. Common monounsaturated fatty acids are palmitoleic acid, cis-vaccenic acid, and oleic acid. MUFAs are good fats that are liquid at room temperature, and turn solid when chilled. Common sources of MUFAs are olive oil, avocadoes and nuts. Other oils high in monounsaturated fats are; canola oil, peanut oil, safflower oil, and sesame oil. MUFAs are a healthy alternative to the trans fats and refined polyunsaturated fats found in most processed foods.

LP203045-2 Alpha linolenate intake
Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) is an essential omega-3 fatty acid. It is called "essential" because it is needed for normal human growth and development. Nuts, such as walnuts, are good sources of alpha-linolenic acid. It is also found in vegetable oils such as flaxseed oil, canola oil, and soybean oil, as well as in red meat and dairy products. Epidemiological studies and dietary trials in humans suggest that alpha-linolenic acid is a major cardio-protective nutrient. PMID: 15330276

LP203046-0 Eicosapentaenoate intake
Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) is one of three principal omega-3 fatty acids (along with alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)). ALA can be converted, usually in small amounts, into EPA and DHA in the body. EPA can be found in seafood, including fatty fish (e.g. salmon, tuna, and trout) and shellfish (e.g. crab, mussels, and oysters). Omega-3 fatty acids, including EPA, are important for a number of bodily functions, including muscle activity, blood clotting, digestion, fertility, and cell division and growth.

LP203047-8 Docosahexaenoate intake
Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), is an omega-3 fatty acid essential for the growth and functional development of the brain in infants and for maintenance of normal brain function in adults. Plentiful DHA in the diet improves learning ability, whereas deficiencies of DHA are associated with deficits in learning. DHA is taken up by the brain in preference to other fatty acids. DHA deficiencies are associated with fetal alcohol syndrome, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, cystic fibrosis, phenylketonuria, unipolar depression, aggressive hostility, and adrenoleukodystrophy. Decreases in DHA in the brain are associated with cognitive decline during aging and with onset of sporadic Alzheimer disease. Epidemiological studies have shown a strong correlation between fish consumption and reduction in sudden death from myocardial infarction. DHA is present in fatty fish (salmon, tuna, mackerel) and mother's milk. PMID: 10479465

Essential fatty acids, (EFAs) are fatty acids that humans and other animals must ingest because the body requires them for good health but cannot synthesize them. The term "essential fatty acid" refers to fatty acids required for biological processes but does not include the fats that only act as fuel. Essential fatty acids should not be confused with essential oils, which are "essential" in the sense of being a concentrated essence. Only two fatty acids are known to be essential for humans: alpha-linolenic acid (an omega-3 fatty acid) and linoleic acid (an omega-6 fatty acid). Some other fatty acids are sometimes classified as "conditionally essential," meaning that they can become essential under some developmental or disease conditions; examples include docosahexaenoic acid (an omega-3 fatty acid) and gamma-linolenic acid (an omega-6 fatty acid).[Wikipedia: Essential fatty acid]

LP203049-4 Medium chain triglyceride intake
Medium chain triglycerides (MCTs) are partially man-made fats generally made by processing coconut and palm kernel oils in the laboratory. "Medium" refers to the chain length of the fatty acids. Oils can contain short chain, medium chain, or long chain fatty acids and most oils are a combination of all three types. Medium chain fatty acids contain between 6 and 12 carbon chains. They are: C6 caproic acid, C8 caprylic acid, C10 capric acid, and C12 lauric acid. MCTs passively diffuse from the GI tract to the portal system without requirement for modification like long-chain fatty acids or very-long-chain fatty acids. MCTs do not require bile salts for digestion. Patients who have malnutrition, malabsorption or particular fatty-acid metabolism disorders are treated with MCTs, as MCTs do not require energy for absorption, use, or storage. They have potentially beneficial attributes in protein metabolism, but may be contraindicated in some situations due to a reported tendency to induce ketogenesis and metabolic acidosis.
