HIV 1+2 RNA [Presence] in Serum or Plasma by NAA with probe detection
Active
Term Description
This term is used for assays that can detect, but not differentiate between, HIV-1 and HIV-2 RNA. This term was created for, but is not limited in use to, the submitter's cobas HIV-1/HIV-2 qualitative assay.

Part Description
LP16715-2 HIV 1+2
Two types of human immunodeficiency viruses (HIV) have been characterized: HIV-1 and HIV-2. HIV-1 was initially discovered in the early 1980s and thought to be the sole causative agent of HIV infections and ultimately AIDS. In 1986, HIV-2 was isolated and also found to cause AIDs. HIV-1 is more virulent and the predominant cause of the HIV infections worldwide. HIV-2 is poorly transmitted and is primarily concentrated in West Africa.
Presently (2012), HIV-1 strains are divided into four groups, including group M (major) with subtypes A through K, group O (outlier), group N (non-M or O), and group P. HIV-2 is divided into subtypes A through E. Occasionally, two viruses of different subtypes can "cross react" and blend their genetic material to create a new hybrid HIV virus. However, many of these new strains do not survive for long. Studies have also shown that the core proteins of HIV-1 and HIV-2 display frequent cross-reactivity whereas the envelope proteins are more type-specific.
