Part Description
LP38393-2 Herpes virus 7 DNA
Herpes virus 7 (HHV-7) is a double-stranded DNA virus that belongs to the Betaherpesviridae subfamily. It was first isolated from CD4+ lymphocytes (the cells in which it replicates) in 1990 and has been shown to be closely related to Herpes virus 6 (HHV-6). HHV-7 is ubiquitous 95% of adults test positive for the virus, 75% of whom will shed the virus in their saliva throughout their lives. Initial infection usually occurs in childhood at around age three. Infection with HHV-7 is generally asymptomatic and resolves without treatment. On rare occasions severe complications occur that can lead to death, especially in patients who have had organ transplants. Infection with HHV-7 is one of the viruses (along with HHV-6) that causes exanthema subitum (Roseola infantum). Diagnostic tests for HHV-7 have been mostly confined to research since rapid virological diagnosis has proven difficult and cross-reactivity with HHV-6 is an ongoing problem. Real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is the best method to measure the copy numbers of HHV-7. PMID: 15004116, [https://www.uptodate.com/contents/human-herpesvirus-7-infection]
