Part Description
LP262453-6 Parechovirus A
The Parechovirus belongs to the family Picornaviridae and is a small, nonenveloped RNA virus with icosahedral capsids. There are two species of Parechovirus including Parechovirus A (HPeV), previously named Human parechovirus, and Parechovirus B, previously named Ljungan virus. HPeV is made up of nineteen types designated as HPeV-1 to HPeV-19. Human infection by HPeV occurs worldwide and is often asymptomatic. Transmission of HPeV is by the fecal-oral route, respiratory secretions and fomites. When symptoms occur, they usually consist of mild gastroenteritis and respiratory symptoms. More serious disease has been attributed to HPeV-3, which can cause neonatal sepsis and aseptic meningitis in children. In 9 out of 10 neonates infected with HPeV-3, there is white matter damage which can lead to cerebral palsy, epilepsy and learning disabilities. There is no FDA approved anti-viral treatment for HPeV available, though there are some therapies in development that target viral capsid proteins, proteases and polymerase.
