Part Description
LP248331-3 Lawsonia intracellularis
Lawsonia intracellularis is a small, intracellular, gram negative rod bacteria which causes proliferative enteropathy in pigs. Proliferative enteropathy is a thickening of the intestinal epithelium from the proliferation of enterocytes (cells of the intestinal lining). The disease is endemic in swine and has also been reported in other species such as equine where outbreaks have been reported worldwide in foals since 2009. The two main clinical presentations of proliferative enteropathy are porcine intestinal adenomatosis (PIA), which affects pigs that are 6-20 weeks old, and proliferative hemorrhagic enteropathy (PHE), which affects 4-12 month olds. Severe PIA can lead to necrotizing enteritis with coagulative necrosis of the adenomatous mucosa. PMID: 24476941 A potential target when testing for Lawsonia intracellularis RNA is the 16s ribosomal RNA gene.
