Foreign material [Presence] in Food
Active
Term Description
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is a government agency whose duties include protecting the public by verifying food safety. When foreign material is found in the food supply, the FDA will publicize the finding and assist in the recall of the affected food. [https://www.fda.gov/AboutFDA/WhatWeDo/default.htm] The FDA uses the words foreign material, filth, and extraneous material interchangably, as any material that clearly does not belong in a food product. Examples of foreign material in food include metal or class shards, insects, and rodent excreta. [https://www.fda.gov/scienceresearch/fieldscience/laboratorymanual/ucm171979.htm]
