Borrelia afzelii+burgdorferi+garinii IgM Ab [Presence] in Serum by Line blot
Active
Term Description
Qualitative detection of IgM antibodies against Borrelia afzelii, B burgdorferi, and B garinii species in human serum. This test does not differentiate between the Borrelia species. This term was created for, but not limited in use to, the Borrelia ViraStripe IgM assay, which uses native, purified antigens immobilized on a test strip to which patient antibodies, if present, will bind. Various manufacturers label this method as an immunoblot technique. LOINC uses the immunoblot (IB) method to mean that some electrophoretic/chromatographic separation occurs such that position (size) of the band is part of the laboratory assessment (as in Western blot). Because this assay does not involve a separation step but rather uses strips with pre-fixed antigens, the LOINC Method is Line blot.

Part Description
LP262543-4 Borrelia afzelii+burgdorferi+garinii
Borrelia afzelii, B borgdorferi, and B garinii are spirochetes and known etiological agents of Lyme borreliosis (Lyme disease). B garinii and B afzelii are more prevalent in Europe and regions of Asia, whereas B borgdorferi is the primary agent causing in Lyme disease in North America. PMID: 21414082 Travelers or residents of these regions who are bitten by ticks are at increased risk for Lyme disease caused by a Borrelia species. The bacteria are transmitted to humans by the bite of infected ticks of the Ixodes genus. PMID: 21413339 Many patients will develop a red rash (erythema migrans) at the site of the tick bite. Other symptoms include fever, headache, feeling tired, facial nerve paralysis, joint pains, and meningitis. Symptoms can occur within a few days to a month or more after the bite. Antibiotics commonly used for oral treatment of Lyme disease include doxycycline, amoxicillin, or cefuroxime axetil.[CDC:lyme]

- This term was created for an assay that uses a membrane strip pre-coated with a specific set of antigens in parallel lines. Because the antigens are seperated by electrophoresis/chromatographic separation during manufacturing, not during the test procedure itself, this test was assigned a LOINC Method of Immunoassay (IA) and not Immunoblot (IB). However, upon further review of IA, IB, and Immunoblot strip methodologies and regulatory distinctions between these, we changed the Method from IA to Line blot so that users can distinguish between these three Methods. The meaning of the term has not changed since it was created for an IB strip assay as described in the term description.
