LP262435-3 Porcine parainfluenza virus 1
Veterinary Medicine:
Porcine parainfluenza virus 1 (PPIV1) is an enveloped, non-segmented, single-stranded RNA virus found only in domestic pigs. PPIV1 was first identified in Hong Kong in samples collected between 2008 and 2012. In 2013, the virus was discovered in clinical specimens of pigs with respiratory disease in the United States. There have been no known infections of PPIV1 in humans. PPIV1 is transmitted in respiratory secretions and symptoms of infection include lethargy, coughing and sneezing with serous nasal discharge. Pigs less than 21 days old are most likely to be symptomatic when infected. Some asymptomatic pigs have tested positive for the virus. PPIV1 has not been cultured in cells but it can be seen in respiratory tissue using in situ hybridization and quantified using RT-PCR assays. Assays that identify antibodies to PPIV1 include immunoprecipitation coupled with PCR detection (ICPD) and indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay using a recombinant fusion (F) protein peptide (PPIV1 F ELISA). There are currently no vaccines for PPIV1 available.[http://www.cfsph.iastate.edu/pdf/shic-factsheet-porcine-parainfluenza-virus-1]The fusion F protein mediates the union and penetration of the virus into the cell.
