Several species of the gram-negative spirochete Brachyspira can cause swine dysentery (SD) including B. hyodysenteriae, B. intermedia, B. innocens, B. murdochii, B. aalborgi, B. alvinipulli, B. suanatina, and a provisional species called Brachyspira hampsonii. B. hyodysenteriae, B. suanatina, and B. hampsonii cause a severe mucohaemorrhagic colitis found mainly in grower and finisher pigs. Brachyspira that are weakly heamolytic causing a mild colitis include B. murdochii, B. intermedia, B. aalborgi, and B. alvinipulli in pigs, chickens and humans. Transmission of Brachyspira sp can occur in several ways including: pigs that have subclinical infection; infection from birds or feral animals that act as potential reservoirs; reduced immunity in a herd; routine diagnostic and control measures are not adhered to; and environmental changes such as a change in diet, co-infections and other stresses that increase norepinephrine levels in the gut that can result in the growth and colonization of some species of Brachyspira.
