Part Description
LP251132-9 Brachyspira pilosicoli
Brachyspira pilosicoli is an intestinal spirochete that infects the large intestine of pigs and causes porcine intestinal spirochetosis. It also infects humans, non-human primates, dogs, several species of birds, and mice, with mice being a probable reservoir of infection for swine. B. pilosicoli can be grown on modified BJ culture medium that lacks rifampicin and spiramycin, and can be differentiated from other Brachyspira species using biochemical testing. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing is required to definitively identify B. pilosicoli. B. pilosicoli is transmitted by the fecal-oral oral route, and the incubation period of B. piosicoli is 3-16 days. Symptoms of infection are diarrhea and poor growth for 2-6 weeks. It is nonfatal in swine. To definitively diagnose intestinal spirochetosis, the typical colonic leasion must be observed and infection by B. pilosicoli must be confirmed. Infection of swine with B. pilosicoli occurs in most countries with swine-producing industries.[https://www.aasv.org/shap/issues/v7n6/v7n6p287.pdf]
