Inhibin A is a dimeric inhibin synthesized and secreted by the ovary granulosa cells, testis Sertoli cells, and placenta. Increased levels of Inhibin A are seen in women with fetuses affected by Down's syndrome and are measured as part of some second trimester maternal screens. The addition of inhibin A testing to second trimester screens including AFP and hCG has been shown to significantly improve the rate of detection of Down's syndrome. Inhibin-B is a major circulating Inhibin in males and is also present in the female. It is a potential tumor marker for post-menopausal women diagnostic screen test. Women aged 35 years or greater, women of any age experiencing unexplained infertility who have a poor response to ovulation induction, women presenting for other tests of ovarian reserve including day 3 FSH and clomiphene challenge test, and women with recurrent pregnancy losses should be tested for day 3 Inhibin B concentrations.
