Term Description

Drug of abuse screen with confirmation in urine. Testing begins with screening assays followed by additional confirmation testing for positive results. Confirmation methods may include gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), gas chromatography-flame ionization detector (for ethanol), and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The drugs tested and methods used for confirmation may vary across labs. Drugs of abuse commonly tested include amphetamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, cocaine, ethanol, marijuana, opiates, and phencyclidine.
