Legionella pneumophila Ag [Presence] in Lower respiratory specimen by Immunofluorescence
Active
Term Description
Immunofluorescence testing of lower respiratory specimens for Legionella pneumophila antigen has over 99% specificity, but only 25-70% of patients with culture-positive disease test positive for the antigen. Therefore, IF cannot be used to rule out Legionella infection, but a positive result is nearly always diagnostic. [http://www.who.int/water_sanitation_health/emerging/legionella.pdf]
Part Description
LP16720-2 Legionella pneumophila
Legionella pneumophila, a gram-negative bacillus, most commonly causes acute pneumonia (legionellosis). Transmission to humans is usually through aerosols of infected water sources such as fountains, misting systems, and drinking water. Severity of infections due to L. pneumophila range from mild (walking pneumonia) to fatal (multilobar pneumonia). Antimicrobial therapy usually includes erythromycin, with the addition of rifampin in severe cases. Initial response to therapy is usually rapid, but full recovery can take weeks to months.
