Microorganism preliminary growth detection panel - Body fluid by Culture
Active
90429-2 Microorganism preliminary growth [Presence] in Body fluid by Aerobe culture
Term Description
This term represents the preliminary step of the culture process that is used to determine whether or not a viable aerobic microorganism is present in the specimen. At the present time (2018), this result would typically be transmitted between laboratory devices and/or stored in the laboratory information system (LIS/LIMS), but it would not be used to order a culture or report culture results to the patient's electronic health record (EHR). Rather, the corresponding LOINC code with Property Prid and Scale Nom is used to order the culture, report this preliminary result, and report the results of any subsequent organism identification tests that are performed. This term was created for, but is not limited in use to, the bioMerieux BacT culture bottles for the recovery and detection of aerobic microorganisms (bacteria and fungi).

LP6103-8 Aerobic culture
An aerobic culture is a laboratory procedure where a sample of tissue or fluid from a patient is placed in or on growth media (agar, broth) in the presence of oxygen to induce the proliferation of potentially infectious agents (bacteria, fungi, viruses). Microbial growth is documented and the organisms are identified to determine whether or not a pathogen is present.Once a pathogen is identified, specific testing techniques can be used to determine drug susceptibilities for assistance in treatment. LP7238-1 Body fld
The LOINC "Body fld" System represents body fluids other than serum, plasma, blood, urine, and cerebrospinal fluid. When a LOINC term with the System "Body fld" is used, the specific specimen source or body fluid type should be reported elsewhere with the result. Where more specific terms for pleural, peritoneal, synovial fluid, etc. exist, we encourage you to use the more specific terms. In contrast to "Body fld", the System "Asp" in LOINC represents the fluid withdrawn during an aspiration procedure from an abnormal collection of fluid, such as from an abscess or cyst. "Asp" is used for abnormal fluid collections that are aspirated, while "Body fld" is used for named body fluids, such as synovial fluid or peritoneal fluid, that are not inherently pathologic.
