Part Description

LP157352-8   Mycobacterium leprae
Mycobacterium leprae is the bacterium that causes leprosy. Leprosy is a chronic illness that affects the skin, peripheral nerves, eyes and mucosa of the upper respiratory tract. Infection with Mycobacterium leprae causes numbness, nerve damage, disfigurement of limbs and tissue decay. M. leprae was discovered in 1873 by Armauer Hansen in Bergen, Norway and was the first organism to be associated with a human disease. It is an acid fast rod shaped obligate intracellular bacterium. It is drawn to macrophages and especially Schwann cells of the peripheral nerves. It is difficult to culture in vitro which has impeded an understanding of how it is transmitted, in what environment it resides and why infected individuals have such different clinical outcomes. Treatment involves monthly rifampicin and dapsone and clofazimine on a daily basis for 12 months. Drug resistance testing is mostly molecular and focuses on specific mutations associated with drug resistance.[https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3076554/] Source: Regenstrief LOINC
