Power is defined as the rate at which energy is transfered from one place to another or transformed from one form to another. Power is expressed in the SI unit watt (W), named in honor of the Scottish engineer James Watt. A Watt is equivalent to one joule (J) per second (s), W=J/s. The commonly used measure of engine power, the horsepower, is approximately 746 W.
