Part Descriptions
LP17151-9 Naegleria fowleri
Naegleria fowleri is a free-living amebae that can infect the central nervous system (CNS) and cause life-threatening disease. The route of entry and clinical course of infection varies with the type of ameba involved. N. fowleri live in warm, stagnant fresh water lakes and nonsterile water. The amebae is acquired by entering through the nasal sinuses, traveling along the olfactory nerve through the skull and into the central nervous system (CNS). N. fowleri causes rapidly progressive primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM) and is typically fatal within several days of exposure. Most diagnoses are made after death due to the rarity of the condition. PMID: 22520593
