Bourbon virus was identified in Bourbon County, Kansas in 2014. Bourbon virus belongs to the group of viruses called thogotoviruses. Bourbon virus is an enveloped RNA virus belonging to the family Orthomyxoviridae, genus Thogotovirus [NCBI Taxonomy: 1618189] PMID: 31419524. Mode of transmission is unknown, but likely occurs through tick or other insect bites. Symptoms include fever, fatigue, maculopapular rash, headache, body aches, nausea, and vomiting. Thrombocytopenia and leukopenia have also been reported [CDC: ncezid/dvbd/bourbon/index.html].
