Description
Selenium (Se) is a semimetal (metalloid) with four natural oxidation states, and it shares similar chemical and biological properties with sulfur. It is an essential constituent of glutathione peroxidase. Deficiencies in selenium have been linked to increased risk of cancer. Recent studies have shown that selenium is essential for normal thyroid metabolism.
Veterinary Medicine:
Se poisoning in swines is rare and usually occurs when the selenium supplement has been wrongly mixed into the feed. Toxicity occurs with 5 mg/kg or more in the diet. PMID: 11325201 Symptoms include anorexia, hair loss, hoof loss followed by liver and kidney damage.
