Version 2.78

Description

Cobalt is a chemical element used to manufacture hard metal alloys, glass, paints and fertilizers. It is also an essential element supplied through dietary intake. High levels of cobalt in patients due to toxic ingestion or occupational exposure can cause erythrocytosis, cardiomyopathy, allergic dermatitis, pulmonary fibrosis, cough and dyspnea.

Veterinary Medicine:
Low levels of cobalt are known to cause anemia in pigs. Daily doses of cobalt sulphate can induce myocardial damage in pigs, but this can be prevented by intramuscular administration of sodium selenite and alpha-tocopherol on previous day. Source: Regenstrief LOINC
