Fibrinogen
Active
Description
Fibrinogen is a plasma glycoprotein that was first isolated from horse plasma in 1876. Fibrinogen is produced in the liver and constitutes 5% of the total plasma protein. It is vital to wound healing, fibrinolysis, inflammation, cellular and matrix interactions and neoplasia by interacting with numerous proteins and cells. Fibrinogen activates a series of clotting factors in response to an injury or other stimuli that leads to the enzymatic conversion of soluble fibrinogen into fibrin. Fibrin is the insoluble, structural component of blood clots. Fibrinogen is an acute phase reactant that can increase 200-400% in response to infection, chronic inflammation, smoking and other environmental stresses.
