Version 2.78

Description

Normeperidine is a major metabolite of meperidine and very weak analgesic. It is half as potent as meperidine as an analgesic but 2-3 times more potent as a convulsant. The half-life of normeperidine is increased in patient's with renal failure. Symptoms of normeperidine accumulation progress from irritability to tremors and generalized seizures. Such patients are known to have high plasma concentrations of normeperidine. When naloxone is administered for normeperidine-induced seizures, an exacerbation of the seizures occurs due to antagonism of the seizure-suppressing effects of meperidine.
