Descriptions

A spermatozoon or spermatozoan (pl. spermatozoa), from the ancient Greek (seed) and (living being) is the haploid cell that is the male gamete. After a female ovum is fertilized by a sperm cell it becomes a zygote. Sperm cells contribute half of the genetic information to the diploid offspring and the other hallf is contributed by the female ovum. In mammals, the sex of the offspring is determined by the sperm cells: a spermatozoon bearing a Y chromosome will lead to a male (XY) offspring, whereas one bearing an X chromosome will lead to a female (XX) offspring (the ovum always provides an X chromosome). Mature male germ cells derive from spermatids. As spermatids move toward the lumen of the seminiferous tubules, they undergo extensive structural changes including the loss of cytoplasm, condensation of chromatin into the sperm head , formation of the acrosome cap, the sperm midpiece and the sperm tail that provides motility.
