Description
Streptococcus pyogenes, also known as Group A Streptococcus (GAS), is a species of gram-positive, coccoid, beta-hemolytic bacteria. It is responsible for a wide variety of both invasive and non-invasive diseases including scarlet fever, pharyngitis, impetigo, cellulitis, necrotizing fasciitis and toxic shock syndrome, as well as the sequelae of rheumatic fever and acute poststreptococcal glomerulonephritis. Invasive GAS infections can be associated with very high mortality rates. PMID: 26866208 Source: Regenstrief LOINC
