Version 2.78

Description

Apolipoproteins are a family of proteins involved in cholesterol transport and metabolism. Apoliprotein E is important in cholesterol transport throughout the body and is encoded by the APOE gene. The three most common forms of apolipoprotein E are E2, E3 and E4, which are encoded by the APOE allele variants e2, e3 (the wild type form) and e4, respectively. The E3 form is responsible for typical cholesterol metabolism. E2 and E4 are associated with alterations in lipid transport and metabolism, and nearly all patients with type III hyperlipoproteinemia (HLP), a familial disorder associated with early atherosclerosis, exclusively make the E2 form of apolipoprotein E. However, 90% of people that only make E2 have cholesterol levels in the normal range, and only about 10% have type III HLP. E4 may also be a marker for Alzheimer's disease.
