Descriptions

An essential amino acid that is physiologically active in the L-form. Source: National Library of Medicine, MeSH 2006

Arginine is a basic amino acid with basic R groups involved in urea synthesis. It is important in cell division, wound healing, ammonia removal from the body, immune function, and hormone release. It is increased with arginase deficiency, cystinuria, and lysine intolerance (Information from LOINC partner 1 9/15/06). Source: Regenstrief LOINC

Arginine is a primary marker for argininemia and a secondary marker for Citrullinemia type II. Source: Regenstrief LOINC

Arginine (symbol Arg or R) is an amino acid. The L-form (L-arginine) is one of the 20 most common natural amino acids. In mammals, arginine is classified as a conditionally essential amino acid, depending on the developmental stage and health status of the individuals. Infants are unable to effectively synthesize arginine, making it nutritionally essential for them. Adults, however, are able to synthesize arginine in the urea cycle. The body uses arginine for a variety of purposes, including boosting immune system function and improving blood flow. Arginine sources include diet, medication, and/or nutritional supplements. Dietary sources include meat, dairy products and fish. Source: Medline Plus, MedlinePlus: L-arginine
