Erythropoietin

Descriptions
Glycoprotein hormone, secreted chiefly by the kidney in the adult and the liver in the fetus, that acts on erythroid stem cells of the bone marrow to stimulate proliferation and differentiation. Source: National Library of Medicine, MeSH 2006
Erythropoietin is a glycoprotein hormone that regulates erythropoiesis. Its levels vary based on the degree of anemia, and most patients with anemia will have higher levels. Levels are also measured to help differentiate primary and secondary polycythemia and monitor erythropoietin-producing tumors. Morning levels may be higher due to diurnal rhythms. Levels are increased with renal neoplasms, benign tumors, polycystic kidney disease, renal cysts, hydronephrosis, and pregnancy.
